General Guidelines

Manuscripts should be submitted exclusively via the PEMR online submission portal. Authors must first register and follow the instructions to begin a submission. All manuscripts must be prepared using widely accepted word processing software (e.g., Microsoft Word).

Submissions should be original, unpublished works not under review elsewhere. Manuscripts must not exceed 8,000 words, including the abstract, references, and endnotes. Tables, figures, charts, and appendices are excluded from this word count. Text must be double-spaced, in 12-point Times New Roman font, with 1-inch margins.

Manuscripts must be written in the third person unless authors are specifically invited to submit a personal editorial or commentary. Authors should include three to five succinct Evidence for Practice points summarizing actionable insights derived from their research. These points are required upon resubmission.

All submitted manuscripts must demonstrate a similarity index of less than 20% using Turnitin or a comparable plagiarism detection tool.

Review Process

PEMR operates a double-blind peer review system. Submissions must exclude any identifying author information. The manuscript must include a title and abstract (maximum 150 words) on a separate title page, without author names. Authors must avoid self-identification within the text or references. Do not include acknowledgments, institutional affiliations, or URLs in the main manuscript.

Writing Style and Accessibility

All submissions should be written in clear, concise English accessible to both scholars and practitioners. Avoid jargon, unexplained acronyms, and technical language. Spell out acronyms at first use. Limit their repetition. Use American English consistently.

Formatting Requirements

  • Tables and Figures: Place each on a separate page at the end of the manuscript. Indicate placement within the text using markers such as [Table 1 here]. Avoid color and heavy shading.

  • Headings:

Title and major headings: 14-point bold title case

Secondary headings: 12-point bold title case

Sub-subheadings: 12-point bold italic title case, run-in style

  • Quotations: Block quotes (6+ lines) should be offset in 11-point font, no quotation marks. Inline quotes should use quotation marks and include page references.

  • Capitalization: Use title case for section headings and titles. Minimize unnecessary capitalization.

  • Italics: Use for journal/book titles, unfamiliar foreign terms, or emphasis (sparingly).

References and Citations

Use the Chicago Manual of Style (16th edition), Author-Date format. All references must include full first names of authors. Endnotes should be listed before the reference section, manually entered (no autoformatting or footnotes).

Manuscript Structure

  1. Abstract (max 150 words)

  2. Evidence for Practice (3-5 bullet points)

  3. Introduction (no heading)

  4. Theory

  5. Methods

  6. Results

  7. Discussion

  8. Conclusion

Do not use headings such as "Introduction" or refer to the article in the abstract. Use descriptive, searchable titles (8 words or fewer if possible).

Ethical Requirements and AI Use

Authors must disclose any use of generative AI tools (e.g., ChatGPT) within the Methods or Acknowledgments section. AI may not be used to generate data or serve as an author. Peer reviewers must not upload manuscripts into AI tools. The integrity and confidentiality of the peer review process must be maintained.

Accepted Manuscripts and Publication

Upon acceptance, authors will be guided through the production process. Proofs will be delivered electronically and must be returned within 48 hours. PEMR may offer Early View publication with DOI assignment prior to final issue allocation.

Language Support

Authors whose primary language is not English are encouraged to use professional English editing services prior to submission.

Outreach and Visibility

Authors are encouraged to promote their work through professional networks and social media. PEMR offers support for digital promotion in collaboration with our editorial team.
